I’ve always admired all of DJ Ajax’s stuff, especially his Bang Gang DJs stuff (like the Light Sound Dance Grey Disc). I was saddened to read this tonight:
“DJ Ajax was crossing a road in Parkville, an inner-Melbourne suburb, in the early hours of 28 February 2013 when he was hit by a truck and died at the scene.”
We went to see Fat Freddy’s Drop tonight at the Tivoli in Brisbane. It was one of two Australian shows this month, so we felt pretty special to see them live again. We had choice spot on the upper right balcony which meant the view was especially awesome.
Their new material was especially enjoyable, I look forward to their new album later this year.
I went and saw Ben Folds play last night at the QPAC in South Bank. He was supported by Kate Miller-Heidke, who joined him on stage for three songs. It was a great concert, he played a lot of material from his latest album, as well as some classics like ‘underground’. Good times.
We were lucky enough to get our hands on some great tickets to see the Gotan Project at the Brisbane Powerhouse last Saturday night. Wow; what a show. We didn’t really know what to expect, but it was a mish-mash of beats, a large video screen, various instrumentals and superb Argentinian vocals. Absolutely amazing, absolutely spectacular. Wow.
Julia Stone recently released her first solo album: the memory machine. The album booklet features beautifully drawn, old skool Hollywood poster styled images for each track drawn by Caroline Pedler. I recognize a couple of the songs from when we heard her play in Brisbane a month ago.
We all ventured down the street for the Go Between Bridge Concert last Friday night, Junior Pixels included as babies were admitted free! It was kinda weird watching a live music concert on a bridge, but the incline allowed us to have a very good view even when standing at the back. The night was a lot of fun, we ended up seeing Josh Pyke, Robert Forster and Angus & Julia Stone play. The Stones were our pick, which was expected, and when Angus sang The Yellow Brick Road I couldn’t believe my luck. As the fireworks began, we managed to hail a green cab (literally a three wheeled bicycle) who took the three of us home. What an amazing night!
Whilst out walking Junior Pixels this morning, Kitty spotted an Angus & Julia Stone tour poster: “but they only just toured!” I said. But, yes, they’re touring again this September. We saw them in March, and since they were a-maz-ing, we’re gonna go again in September. Tour dates are here, tickets on sale Friday 7 May. I also found some pictures of their last tour that we saw (by Henryk Lobaczewski via myspace).
I haven’t updated my music page for a while, which doesn’t mean I am not listening to (new) music, just that I have been a bit slack updating this site.
The latest album I am getting into is Groove Armada’s Black Light album, released last month. Kitty isn’t a big fan, yet, but I like it as it is taking them in a different direction.
We have also been listening to the Chillout Sessions XII on pretty heavy rotation, including a watching whole heap of the film clips from youtube.
One of my favourite songs from the album is the ultra-catchy, yet somewhat dark, Burial by Miike Snow, which has a cool film clip as well.
