fat freddy’s drop touring oz in march 2009

My pretty much all-time favourite band are touring Australia next month. With a choice between the Tivoli in Brisbane on a Friday, or two gigs (Saturday & Sunday) in Byron Bay, we opted for Byron, with the added bonus of the Byron tix being about $20 cheaper.

weekend roundup

We had a pretty fun-filled weekend in Brisbane:

  • Friday Night: I had a friend over from work and we drank a couple of Cascade Greens and ate some Texan Beef sausages with fried onions;
  • Saturday Lunch: Kitty and I had Dim Sum at Yum Cha in the city;
  • Saturday Afternoon: We went to see Yes Man at Myer Centre Cinema with some corporate vouchers we got for Christmas: quite an enjoyable movie;
  • Saturday Evening: We went for a drive to Mount Coot-tha. We sat and watched the stars and city lights while drinking our BYO tea and pineapple;
  • Sunday Morning: We went for a walk through South Bank and right along Boundary Street, West End. We spent some time looking in shops including the great Avid Reader store;
  • Sunday Lunch: We cooked burgers. Mine looked so great Kitty took a photo:

  • Sunday Evening: We met K’s little sister for takeaway in the park on Bowen Terrace looking at the Storey Bridge.
  • Sunday Night: I hung the canvases I made last weekend with fabric and frames from IKEA.

They cost $8 each to make, and I still can’t decide on a favourite.

Good times.

five of my favourite places for bootleg dj mixes

I like listening to bootleg DJ mixes (hip-hop or electro or both) that I download online because you can’t buy them because of royalties. Here’s my five favourite places to find them:

  1. DJ Greg J: LA DJ who does great mixes of US hip hop with occasional mainstream stuff. Released every couple of months.
  2. Bang Gang DJs podcast: a group of Sydney DJs including Ajax who do crazy electro mixes. Site not suitable for work.
  3. The Avalanches Mixes: this site hasn’t been updated in so long it is ridiculous but there is some great existing stuff on there including the top notch Some People mix.
  4. Beatonic: another site that hasn’t been updated that recently, but again, some exciting mixes already posted, quite breaksy.
  5. DJ Nick Toth: has some great reggae mixes available including Summertime mix and RnB vs House mix.

the fall of the athenian republic

I received an email today entitled “The Fall of the Athenian Republic” from a well read friend. He compares what’s happening at the moment in Australian Parliament to what happened in Greek history.

The current debate in parliament brought this to mind, I had to look up the exact wording:

Quote from “The Fall of the Athenian Republic” as to why the Greek democracies failed:

“A democracy is always temporary in nature; it simply cannot exist as a permanent form of government. A democracy will continue to exist up until the time that voters discover that they can vote themselves generous gifts from the public treasury. From that moment on, the majority always votes for the candidates who promise the most benefits from the public treasury, with the result that every democracy will finally collapse due to loose fiscal policy, (which is) always followed by a dictatorship.”

I thought it was a really cool connection. You can read about it on Wikipedia.
