professor plum, in the hall, with a dagger

On Monday night Kit and I played Scrabble on the balcony. Kit was annoyed at how long I was taking. We weren’t even playing Scrabulous.

On Tuesday night we did crosswords. I realised how bad we actually are. We can only get better with practice (I hope).

Tonight we had an after dinner game of Cluedo along with Kit’s sis.

Kit won by rightly accusing Professor Plum of murder, in the hall, with a dagger.

It was fun as it’s usually just the two of us so we don’t often get to play.

earth hour and neighbour day are on this weekend

Earth Hour and Neighbour Day make the coming weekend a community oriented one. The advertising campaign for Earth Hour is impressive. I found it ironic though when I saw a earth hour lamp post in the city glowing brightly at 12 midday.

I’m organising a block party, byo candle, during Earth Hour. Hopefully some residents will show.

the big issue is 300

It sounds strange, but I really look forward to every second Monday. Not because pay day is imminent, but rather a new issue of The Big Issue comes out. I was surprised then to see a new issue on sale in Brisbane today: the 300th issue.

Big Issue 300

I think it’s the best magazine you can buy for five six bucks. It’s actually my favourite magazine at any price. There’s something about it.

I’ve spent time reading the last few issues trying to figure out what that something is. It’s hard to pinpoint, but I think I worked it out: it’s not pretentious. I originally thought that pretentiousness was about money but it’s not. A free magazine can be pretentious, the Big Issue is not.

Keep up the good work The Big Issue. Keep it real and unpretentious.

travel free throughout brisbane and s.e.q this long weekend

I am not a big fan of Brisbane’s new go card, but a four day weekend of free public transport is simply too good to resist. All you need is a go card and then you can ride free over the Easter break. Simply show the driver your card but don’t touch on or off, otherwise you’ll be charged. This includes all trains, buses and ferries in Brisbane and also the Sunshine Coast and Gold Coast. It doesn’t include the airport train.

If you don’t have a  go card yet, buy one at your train station or at selected newsagents. It requires a deposit of $10 ($5 for concessions) and you don’t even need to add money to it for this weekend.

You can register your card so you can retrieve your balance if it’s lost or stolen but this means they know where you’re going.

jack johnson @ riverstage

There’s something magical about being out in the open watching live music and it’s even more so when Jack Johnson is playing. The Brisbane River Stage venue was packed with a true all ages crowd that included lots of cuddling couples. Jack and his band played a varied collection of his songs including plenty from his new album Sleep Through the Static. He occasionally changed the words of his songs to include lyrics from bands such as Led Zeppelin and Jane’s Addiction, with surprisingly good results.

After leaving the stage for some time he returned with a guitar in hand. His encore was a three song solo acoustic set that finished with a beautiful version of Better Together.

melbourne in three days – art

Melbourne makes it ridiculously easy for you to find street art. Just wander around the city and within minutes you’ll come across an entire lane way of street art such as Union Lane.

The great thing about art is that it is such a personal thing. You can find art in the smallest of things. For example, I thought that there was something cool about the Hotel Windsor room card sleeve…

…and the inside of the State Library of Victoria.
